At its simplest level, the approach to flipped learning can be described as "homework at school and school work at home.”

With flipped learning, direct instruction is moved from group to individual learning spaces, where it becomes a dynamic, interactive learning experience that allows students to apply concepts and engage creatively with the subject matter.  

Prior to class, students engage with course materials on their own and then spend class time working on activities such as problem-solving, group work, and assignments. Within the classroom, students then focus on more difficult applications of concepts and work collaboratively. 

This might look like reviewing a lesson video prior to attending training and then participating in a group discussion with your peers during the in-person session, for example.

Blended learning is an instructional methodology that relies on both face-to-face and online learning. Learners in a blended classroom attend face-to-face instruction in a traditional way, with the primary lecture happening in person. This is essentially how traditional classrooms work, with homework happening at home and school work happening in the classroom.

New material is introduced outside of class in the form of lecture videos, readings, and pre-recorded presentations. Students can view this at home, usually in a learning management system. Next, students have in-person time with the instructor to apply what they learned and have the chance to collaborate with each other.

There's no live instructor delivering the primary information in a flipped classroom. Instead, the initial information is recorded for homework, and practice is done in class via discussion and problem-solving. This helps to deepen learner understanding and encourages collaboration.
